Abstract

We propose the use of techniques developed for sub-wavelength optical microscopy to monitor displacements of macroscopic objects at levels better than 10(-15) m. Models of optomechanical transducers that are based on photon tunneling and near-zone field effects and the sensitivity of some realistic designs are discussed.
