Last year, the Italian Ministry of University has supported a research project of national interest on the analysis and development of advanced solutions for drive-by-wire systems. The research program includes four main themes; they are system dependability and electronic units, electromechanical actuators, communication networks, and electric equipment. The relevant activities are carried out by Research Units belonging to the Universities of Trieste, Pisa, Padova, and Napoli. This paper presents the research program of the various Units and reports on the early results of their activities.

Abstract
