Abstract— This paper illustrates the experiences made on the design and control of permanent magnet synchronous motor drives for electric light traction applications. On the motor side, the paper includes design hints for high efficiency, extended speed range PM machines and fault-tolerant topologies. The control aspects focus on both the current control during flux weakening and a particular fault-tolerant strategy. All of the proposed items have been tested in laboratory and some of them have already found application in industrial products.

Abstract

Abstract— This paper illustrates the experiences made on the design and control of permanent magnet synchronous motor drives for electric light traction applications. On the motor side, the paper includes design hints for high efficiency, extended speed range PM machines and fault-tolerant topologies. The control aspects focus on both the current control during flux weakening and a particular fault-tolerant strategy. All of the proposed items have been tested in laboratory and some of them have already found application in industrial products.
