A diagnostic technìque based on a Fourier Transform Triple Processing is applied in this work to extemal gear pumps. The diagnostic signa! consìsts ofthe delivery pressure acquired by a piezoelectric sensor put in contact wìth the fluid. Analysìs is carried out by comparing the behavior of various pumps having the same nominai characteristics, but with known defects purposely made in the wheel teeth. A mathematical model of the diagnostic signa! from the defective pumps ìs also developed. It allows interpretation of the diagnostic signa! from the Fourier Transforrn Triple Processing and confirms the possibility of detecting the presence and position of defects consisting of small nicks in tooth profiles.
