The facile cleavage of hte C-CN bond in alkyl cyanides by reaction with Ni[P(C6H11)3]3 is reported. Acetonitrile in benzene reacts with the complex under mild conditions to yield methane by abstraction of hydrogen from the cyclohexyl groups.
