Abstract

«According to the antinomy which states that economic history can only either confirm or deny a theory, and over which theoretical economists and disciples of the German Historical School have forever been at loggerheads, only now can we recognize the fundamental data, i.e. economics studies historical facts and a theory consistent with such a nature should be the means of studying them». By this statement Gustavo Del Vecchio (1883-1972) summed up not only his theoretical viewpoint but also a credence which was upheld by early twentieth century Italian economists who, following Pantaleoni, looked to a new economic dynamics as a means by which to link analytical perspective to historical perspective. As Del Vecchio wrote, here dynamics stands for a pattern joining theory and history. According to this, economic dynamics represents an effort to overcome the methodological contrasts that the debate on Methodenstreit enlightened.
