This chapter includes a critical discussion on the quantitative approach to classifying alpine communities proposed by Werner Bätzing. Some tools for describing present tendencies of the Alps as a region are presented and discussed, comparing the quantitative approach with a qualitative one (useful for strategic thought). The text presents the results of the analysis conducted in the fourth work package of the REGALP project. Based on current development tendencies and driving forces, a new description of the Alps is proposed, featuring different groups (clusters) and a varying distribution of areas with homogeneous peculiarities. The importance of emphasising different geographical scales – from the entire Alps to regional situations, a single valley or a small community situation – is pointed out. Thus centrality and periphericity of areas become relative concepts.
