Abstract

Incidents related to the transportation of dangerous goods are comparable in number and magnitude with those occurring in chemical plants. For this reason the development of a methodology to study problems associated with the transportation of hazardous materials must be considered a very important target for Quantified Area Risk Analysis (QARA). An innovative procedure has been created, which represents the framework of the TRAT Rel.2 [TRAT2] software. In this paper, after a brief presentation of the TRAT2 code, its application to the risk analysis of the land transport of dangerous goods in Sicily is outlined. The application is focused on the problem of the transportation of hazardous materials through downtown Messina, then the results of a preliminary evaluation of both individual and societal risk are shown.
