The reflection on human-animal relationship today calls with increasing urgency for a re-thinking of a central concept such that of animal welfare. The definition of 'Quality of Life' for an animal, in terms of the amount of fulfilled expectations, seems to be the inevitable conclusion of the attempt of developing an holistic welfare approach, which includes both physical and mental integrity and has to be considered as an operational and not as merely an ideological or ‘propagandistic’ concept.

Abstract

The reflection on human-animal relationship today calls with increasing urgency for a re-thinking of a central concept such that of animal welfare. The definition of 'Quality of Life' for an animal, in terms of the amount of fulfilled expectations, seems to be the inevitable conclusion of the attempt of developing an holistic welfare approach, which includes both physical and mental integrity and has to be considered as an operational and not as merely an ideological or ‘propagandistic’ concept.
