On the basis of unpublished archival documents, especially the personal dossiers of the judges, F. analyzes the magistrates under investigation (1943-48) for possible sanctions for active involvement in the fascist regime. This supplies some statistical figures of the purge. The “shades of the black” in the title hints at different degrees in which the magistrates and members of the Council of State were involved in the fascist dictatorship.
