The Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a component-based model for building software application using a set of discrete, reusable resources, called services, put them together and compose a complex application. Even if the SOA concepts are not completely new, the advent of open and ubiquitous standards based technologies such as Web Services has brought SOA to be paramount in the development of enterprise applications. In this paper we describe how we leverage the SOA design to improve a legacy, proprietary information system used by a public administration to obtain a new framework based on widely known standards and able to expose a high level of accessibility and integration.

Abstract

The Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a component-based model for building software application using a set of discrete, reusable resources, called services, put them together and compose a complex application. Even if the SOA concepts are not completely new, the advent of open and ubiquitous standards based technologies such as Web Services has brought SOA to be paramount in the development of enterprise applications. In this paper we describe how we leverage the SOA design to improve a legacy, proprietary information system used by a public administration to obtain a new framework based on widely known standards and able to expose a high level of accessibility and integration.
