Two experiments are described investigating the assignment of stress in reading Italian words. In Experiment 1 pairs of semantically related (pupito-predica; pulpit-sermon) or unrelated (tragico-predica; tragic -sermon) words with irregular stress were presented in lists blocked for stress, or mixed with words and nonwords with regular stress. In Experiment 2 list composition was manipulated, with pure lists of words with regular or irregular stress, or mixed lists. The results are discussed in light of the hypothesis that strategic adjustments of the reading routes are carried out in assigning stress during reading.
