The appearance of the term "spirituality" in the contemporary sociological debate is part of the web which characterises the transition from the traditional world to the modern and postmodern: the shift in interest from religion to spirituality and the "recycling" of the same theological concept of spirituality in the sociological ambit all of which make up a mosaic of many tessera. The chapter will discuss why the term religion has suffered and what are the facts which have questioned the plausibility of redrawing the reference of the sacred with the modern western world.
