Abstract

Physicians in care of diabetic patients are anxious to find a single parameter or a combination of parameters that may predict which patients will develop diabetic retinopathy or the rate of progression of early background diabetic retinopathy. The testsu sedi n the evaluationo f this phaseo f retinal involvementd ue to diabetesm ust be easya nd quick enough to be subsequently proposeda s screening methods. Research is currently directed to the analysis of different functional tests which may indicate as early as possiblea derangement of retinal function in diabetics( Waltman, 1984; Sokol et al., 1985). There are numerous methods to study the function of the retina in diabetics; among them the best known and tested are vitreous fluorophotometry and oscillatory potentials, even if a growing interest is now dedicated to other tests (Table I ) . We decided to test the reliability of nyctometry, which measures macular recovery function, on a large diabetic population in a prospective way. We here report our preliminary results concerning the relationship between nyctometry and the retinal situation
