With the passage of pro-Indian legislation in Paraguay and in the province of Misiones (Argentina), the rights of the Guaraní to land ownership were recognized for the first time. The book focuses on the lively debates generated by the laws among both Guaraní communities and pro-Indian groups, analyzing most particularly how the Guaraní developed new political forms and strategies with respect to the larger society and how the latter, by displaying different positions taken with respect to pro-Indian laws, underwent a process of social consciousness and identity construction
