The present paper is the result of student workshops developed within the framework of the “Architectural and Urban Composition 3” course taught on the Masters degree in Building Engineering at the University of Padua during the academic years of 2008-09 and 2010- 11. The research was carried out with a more general purpose in mind, which was to discuss the urban image and apply the theories and techniques of building design from the point of view of a study on architectural sources as well as that of a teaching method. The city of Padua is used as a case study in which the analysis and proposals for a new urban design concentrate on areas that have been affected by rapid post Second World War reconstruction that has resulted in their organic unity with surrounding parts of the city being lost. The research into the planning hypothesis was carried out in ten places within the circle of Padua’s medieval walls recognised as clashing strongly with the neighbouring context. They include some important city sites such as Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) that have never been completely harmonised with the surrounding areas.
