Abstract

A “fact” is transformed into a “piece of news” through the activation of a first process of removing the event from the setting where it happened, and a second process of including the piece of news in the format of the news bulletin. The piece of news, then, is not the mirror of social conditions, but a report on one aspect that has caught the attention. The news verifies the events that have taken place by confirming the fact that such events are predictable. From past experience readers draw precise expectations on the type of events that are described and the media, for their part, try to meet those expectations. The news is responsible for the creation of consensual knowledge trough which the value of a piece of news as such is recognised from the events dealt with by the information system and accepted by the public. The ideologies included in the texts and images of a newspaper do not create new knowledge of the world, but rather “recognition” of the world in line with pre-existing conceptions.
