Abstract

The close relationship between landscapes and people that live in them is put in special emphasis in the recent European Landscape Convention, that, from this point of view, proposes – as the first necessary landscape action measure – the promotion of awareness raising, training and education activities. It is now urgent to understand, in a shared discussion, who, how, where and when should start up these proposals and activities. A double value characterizes landscape education: to educate at landscape knowledge and safeguard, but also to educate “through” the landscape. A strong relationship links these two dimensions, each one with its own specificities. The project “3KCL - Karstic Cultural Landscapes”, sponsored by Cultura 2000 European program, co-ordinated by the Museo di Storia Naturale ed Archeologia in Montebelluna (TV) in collaboration with the Geography Department of the University of Padova, represented a chance of landscape education, that is now proposed as an actual starting point toward a wider discussion concerning objectives, contents, tools. Some project aspects require a specific care: the sharing among the experts and the teachers involved, at the very beginning, of the theoretical and methodological reference points; the direct relationship between research and school worlds; the interaction among pupils of different age and different European countries; the children active participation in the dissemination activities; the sharing of different points of view concerning the same landscape. Landscape education can be interpreted as an important aspect of the education of tomorrow citizens. Starting the observation attitude; the both emotional and cognitive “re-appropriation” of one’s own landscape, considered as “home” in which one lives with his fellow-citizens; proposing an “in depth” approach, that helps in considering not only exterior landscape aspects but also processes and factors; keeping into consideration not only his own point of view but also the ones of other people, also of that who lived in previous and in future time then him: all these peculiarities represent essential elements toward an active and constructive participation at the life of one’s own community.
