Between melodrama and the Italian nationalist movement came about - especially between 1846 and 1849 - a complex exchange relationship operating in both directions: the patriotic themes fell into the intrigues of the opera books and inflamed the audiences well beyond the intentions of the composers; while the devices of the melodramatic narrative influenced the language, gestures and political narrative of the time. The essay analyses how italian national discourse during the Risorgimento was marked by that “melodramatic imagination” about which Peter Brooks masterfully wrote longtime ago.
