An analysis of the discursive strategies and linguistic encoding in 50 PhD US dissertation acknowledgements from ten disciplines within the framework of speech act theory, systemic functional linguistics and genre analysis. The book includes a context-oriented rhetorical examination of the genre of PhD dissertation acknowledgements; a literature review; a description of the data collection procedure and the methodology for the analysis of the corpus; a discussion and illustration of the main characteristics of PDAs (i.e. their functions, formal features, content, macro- and micro- textual organization, semantic patterns); a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the findings; and interpretation of the findings with implications for future research.
