Crack propagation observed in fatigue tests of single lap bonded joints in composite material is analysed. Three different techniques are compared: the first one is based on direct experimental observation of fatigue damage evolution, while the other two ones are indirect methods for crack length estimations. In particular the second one is based on a master stiffness curve, the third one is based on a finite element virtual model of the cracked bonded joint.

Abstract

Crack propagation observed in fatigue tests of single lap bonded joints in composite material is analysed. Three different techniques are compared: the first one is based on direct experimental observation of fatigue damage evolution, while the other two ones are indirect methods for crack length estimations. In particular the second one is based on a master stiffness curve, the third one is based on a finite element virtual model of the cracked bonded joint.
