Analyzing two recent picture books which tell stories set in antebellum United States, it argues that recent developments in the feminist historiography of slavery and the growing body of literary works on slaveryby Black women have influenced the depiction of bondage in children's literature, producing female child protagonists who actively resist their condition and fight for freedom.
