In the previous chapters we have examined several methods to transmit digital signals through a channel without wondering how much information can be effectively carried by the channel, and how it can be robustly encoded into the signal for reliable transmission. In this chapter, based upon the fundamentals of Information Theory introduced in Chapter 3, we introduce the concept of channel capacity, and some techniques of channel coding.
