The increasing attention that leishmaniasis is receiving in Italy is also due to the northward spreading of Leishmania infantum (only species living in the Country). This disease is an important challenge for veterinarians, under different points of view: diagnosis, therapy, epidemiology and, last but not least, prevention. A detailed picture of the epidemiologic situation of canine leishmaniosis in North-Eastern Italy, based on a 10- years entomological and serological monitoring activity, shows the areas at high risk of infection. Finally, since this disease has serious zoonotic implications, the importance of the control of the infection in the dog population is stressed, providing some useful indications for such control activity.
