The polarization properties of the back-reflected signal due to the far-end Fresnel reflection of a single-mode fiber are studied. The proposed scheme, based on a continuous-wave tunable source, permits the measurement of the polarization mode dispersion parameters for fibers up to 50 km in length using the same fiber end for transmission and detection. The results confirm that the differential group delay (DGD) of the round trip, ΔτB, presents a Rayleigh distribution and its mean value is π/2 times larger compared to the DGD of the fiber, Δτ. The statistical distribution of the dispersion vector of the round trip is very similar to a soliton-shape distribution.

Abstract
The polarization properties of the back-reflected signal due to the far-end Fresnel reflection of a single-mode fiber are studied. The proposed scheme, based on a continuous-wave tunable source, permits the measurement of the polarization mode dispersion parameters for fibers up to 50 km in length using the same fiber end for transmission and detection. The results confirm that the differential group delay (DGD) of the round trip, ΔτB, presents a Rayleigh distribution and its mean value is π/2 times larger compared to the DGD of the fiber, Δτ. The statistical distribution of the dispersion vector of the round trip is very similar to a soliton-shape distribution.Pubblicazioni consigliate
