The paper proposes a single stage PWM converter capable of interfacing ac loads with the utility grid. The converter presents the following basic features: generation of a controlled line frequency ac voltage, unity input power factor, high frequency tine and load fiiter inductors. Its main advantage is the complete integration of a high power factor rectifier and an inverter stage, so that a compact converter with only four IGBT’s and six diodes is obtained. By synchronizing the load side and line side controllers and by usy devised modulation strategy, it is possible to achieve line current control over the whole line period. The paper presents a detailed aualysis of the topology, highlighting the design constraints, and proposes a possible design procedure. Experimental results from a laboratory prototype are provided to validate the design procedure and illustrate the converter performance.
