The paper presents the results of a micromechanical DEM-scale approach for the study of a physical model of a foundation on a sandy slope. The slope mass is reproduced with a granular 3-D assembly of scaled spheres. Several numerical tests compared with physical model tests show the effect of boundary conditions, i.e. the base friction and/or degrees of freedom of the plate, on the bearing capacity. The effect of micromechanical parameters on the mechanical response of the material was investigated by simulating some triaxial tests performed on the same sand.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of a micromechanical DEM-scale approach for the study of a physical model of a foundation on a sandy slope. The slope mass is reproduced with a granular 3-D assembly of scaled spheres. Several numerical tests compared with physical model tests show the effect of boundary conditions, i.e. the base friction and/or degrees of freedom of the plate, on the bearing capacity. The effect of micromechanical parameters on the mechanical response of the material was investigated by simulating some triaxial tests performed on the same sand.
