Mean and variance of the channel mutual information for OFDM (Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) systems are investigated. On the one hand, the ergodic capacity does not depend on the channel power delay profile but on the signal-to-noise ratio only. On the other hand, exact and approximated expressions for the variance of the mutual information emphasize the key role played by multipath (frequency) diversity on the second-order statistical characterization of the system performance limits. Finally, the suitability of a Gaussian approximation for the distribution of the channel mutual information is studied through the computation of system outage rates.

Abstract
Mean and variance of the channel mutual information for OFDM (Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) systems are investigated. On the one hand, the ergodic capacity does not depend on the channel power delay profile but on the signal-to-noise ratio only. On the other hand, exact and approximated expressions for the variance of the mutual information emphasize the key role played by multipath (frequency) diversity on the second-order statistical characterization of the system performance limits. Finally, the suitability of a Gaussian approximation for the distribution of the channel mutual information is studied through the computation of system outage rates.Pubblicazioni consigliate
