This paper provides an overview of the recent development of medieval archaeology in Italy. Following a review of current knowledge of rural settlement, urbanism, fortified settlement, trade, burial archaeology and churches, the paper moves on to consider contemporary concerns regrading the role, practice and future of the discipline.
