This paper discusses the functional literacy demands made on L2 students as consumers of media texts as cultural artefacts. It considers the implications of using newspapers as a representation of a foreign culture. While newspapers allow students to explore the stratified system of meaning in texts, the extent to which they effectively overcome cultural boundaries may be questioned.
