In this paper, we investigate the effect of hidden terminals and weak interferers in a multi-rate IEEE 802.11b system. We assume an ad-hoc network configuration, so that all the nodes operate on the same portion of the ISM frequency band. Focusing on a pair of target nodes, we model the signal to noise and interference ratio (SNIR) at the intended receiver, as a function of the distance from the transmitter and from the potential interfering nodes. Hence, we derive the average nominal goodput in different conditions, both for the basic access and RTS/CTS modes. The present study opens a discussion on the efficacy of using RTS/CTS at high transmission rates.
