Families usually face the problems that individual members or the whole family encounter using their own resources or with the help of the “extended” family. If internal resources prove to be insufficient, families are usually obliged to ask for outside help or assistance. They turn to friends and neighbors, to voluntary or social services. When problems are so serious that no one can help, families can only resign themselves to the situation. The aim of this paper is to identify groups of families that present high risks of distress and/or hardship, focusing attention in particular on risks that stem from the structure of the family. Abstract

The data analyzed were collected in 2004 and 2005 by the Regional Center for Documentation and Analysis of the Family, through interviews of a sample of Veneto families. The analysis was conducted using a multivariate sample segmentation methodology.
