This note describes the activities of design and development of an information system which support transportation system planning and control in the Venice District territorial ambit. On this purpose an accurate preliminary analysis of the existing information sources and standards has been carried out along with a study on the formats required/produced as input/output by widely used transportation analysis software. The research has analysed the information provided by hierarchical networks (HN) generally available on the market with regard to the typical needs of the activity of transportation systems planning and control. The information system developed has permitted the integration between HN and the various representations of the network required for different analysis aims (e.g. private or public transport). These representations’ relationship has been organized properly in order to maximize the possible usage of heterogeneous sources. In the note, the relevant stages of the system development dealing with the supply of the transportation system and its topology are described.
