The high-speed magnetically levitated transport systems (MAGLEV) of both electrodynamic (EDS) and electromagnetic (EMS) type have the levitation and propulsion devices integrated in the structure of a linear synchronousmotor (LSM). The electromagnetic design of the systems requires a detailed analysis which cannot be accurately performed on the basis of the established theory of electrical machines, due to the unconventional configurations. Therefore, advanced numerical codesand powerful means of calculations are generally required for the electromagnetic analysis, in particular if an optimization has to be undertaken. The paper describes calculation procedures developed with the aim to get a set of efficient calculation tools expressly created for the electromagnetic design of both EDS and EMS MAGLEV systems, with good performance even on personal computers and with reduced operator supervision.
