The paper presents an investigation on SHPB behaviour used for material characterisation in compression testing at high strain rate. Material flow stress determined with the SHPB test is affected by radial and axial inertia as well as friction. The particular topics treated are the effects of friction between specimen and bars interfaces on the flow stress value as determined with SHPB test. The aim is giving an effective method for friction coefficient determination allowing a proper friction effect correction. The work is based on SHPB tests carried out with different specimens geometry in order to evaluate friction effect. A modified Rastagaev specimen is designed for negligible-friction test. Several friction correction are then compared and the friction coefficient is determined through inverse analysis.
