This work describes a new procedure for detecting the presence, size and position of structural defects in Hopkinson bars. The experimental set-up is based on the acquisition of acoustic vibrations by means of a capacitive sensor. The technique for data processing is mainly based on the spectrum of the power cepstrum. The procedure allows the detection of a defect of only 5% of the bar cross-section.
