The gonadal differentiation of captive-reared Umbrina cirrosa, a valuable candidate for Mediterranean fish culture, was examined throughout the first two years of development. As confirmed by histological control, the ovarian biopsy is an useful tool to rapidly select spawners. A long-acting hormonal treatment was ineffective to induce a precocious spawning in two year old females.
