Abstract

Very peculiar and challenging safety problems are connected to the conservation of the walled towns. The tall, hundreds or thousands meters long masonry walls, made of many separated sectors included between two successive towers, impend in fact over streets and squares while offering, for several reasons, a very poor protection level against any possible local or global structural failures. In the paper examples are presented of how the above problems appeared and have been faced in some of the most important walled towns in the Veneto region.
