Abstract

Ultramafic xenoliths found in the mafic dyke of Valle di Fondi (Sette Comuni Plateau, NE Italy) show textural and compositional features similar to those of well-known mantle xenoliths reported for Tertiary volcanics of the Lessini Hills. The equilibration temperatures reached by minerals (Tmean=985+/-73°C) indicate that these xenoliths re-equilibrated before their incorporation by the host magma. the maximum pressure at which the xenoliths could stabilize are indicated by the composition of spinel, and vary between 1.69 and 1.77 GPa, corresponding to about 50 km in depth. Mafic magma, which originated at deeper depths, therefore pulled away fragments of upper mantle during its rapid ascent to the surface.
