This text studies the countryside in western Europe during the late antique period (V – VII centuries), analyzing on one hand the late antique villas and on the other the evolution of other types of settlements such as villages or hilltop sites. The transformations of material culture and architecture will be studied through archaeological data, while regarding aspects related to changes in property ownership and estate management we cannot ignore the written sources, as clearly emerges from Chris Wickham’s synthesis (2005), where the end of the villas is evaluated as one of the most significant features of the end of the Roman world.

Abstract

This text studies the countryside in western Europe during the late antique period (V – VII centuries), analyzing on one hand the late antique villas and on the other the evolution of other types of settlements such as villages or hilltop sites. The transformations of material culture and architecture will be studied through archaeological data, while regarding aspects related to changes in property ownership and estate management we cannot ignore the written sources, as clearly emerges from Chris Wickham’s synthesis (2005), where the end of the villas is evaluated as one of the most significant features of the end of the Roman world.
