From 1920s to the 1940s, the use of laryngectomy was restricted to small intrinsic cancers of the larynx, and radiotherapy gained favor in the treatment of advanced extrinsic cases. The history of radiation therapy in the treatment of laryngeal cancer is similar to the history of laryngectomy: the firsts attempts were disastrous. In 1924, an advanced extrinsic laryngeal cancer was diagnosed in the eminent Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, who had suffered sore throats for several months. He underwent radiotherapy in Brussels, one of the first centers in the world applying this new method. The famous composer died during the treatment...."
