A comprehensive method of analysis based on energetic, exergetic, economic and emergetic evaluations is proposed and presented in the paper. Emissions to the environment are also considered. Suitable indicators developed within a methodological framework are defined and discussed according to the previous aspects. In the authors’ opinion, by performing and comparing all of these evaluations, valuable information about plant performances can be obtained. This can be helpful in the decision making process. The method proposed here is addressed to policy makers and operators and possibly designers working in the field of energy supply and conversion. Some results from the application to selected plants (hydroelectric, ethanol production and thermoelectric) are presented and compared and general considerations about the effectiveness of different approaches are suggested.
