Subsidence phenomena have only recently gained the interest of the scientists, as the effects of an intense extraction due to industrial and/or agricultural reasons manifested their seriousness. Depending on the nature of the exploited layers, the intensive pumping can cause a decreasing of the thickness stratum, which usually results in a surface lowering and, in turn, in sometimes noticeable consequences for the public property and infrastructures. Several cases of subsidence caused by water extraction have been recorded and documented with a lot of field data: here we refer to the most spectacular ones. A mathematical model for the simulation of such a phenomena is presented, together with the discussion of some test cases of the north-east of Italy, in particular the cases of Ravenna and Venice.
