A wide laboratory investigation is presented in order to emphasize the effects of bentonitic clays and pore fluid on the hydraulic and mechanical properties of sand-clay mixtures. Oedometric, constant- and falling-head permeability and direct shear tests were performed on different plasticity mixtures, saturated alternatively with distilled water and inorganic leachate. Large fluctuations of permeability, compressibility and shear strength were observed.
