An overview of the hydraulic properties of MSW and the results of a wide on-site research programme, with pumping tests and piezometric surveys, are presented in the paper. Hydraulic properties of lanfilled wastes are relevant factors for designing the leachate collection and removal systems of a sanitary landfill. Only properly designed draining systems seems to be able to influence leachate flow regime and to have a good leachate extraction rate. Lastly an application of the Rowe-Nadarajah method for designing a suitable network of pumping wells capable to keep low the leachate mounding are also reported.
