This paper deals with the possible use of movable barriers for limiting the saltwater intrusion propagation in rivers. This apparatus appears of major importance in order to allow for fresh water withdraw from rivers also during the low-water discharge period (irrigation season). The behaviour of the barrier recently built in the Gnocca branch of the Po river in order to limti saltwater intrusion both within the river and in the coastal aquifers, has been in depth investigated.
