The control of vegetative growth during the early phase of fruit development (S I) has been proposed as an alternative to fruit thinning. By reducing competition between vegetative and productive sinks, a higher amount of assimilates can be diverted to the fruits to sustain their growth. Satisfactory results have been obtained on peach with CCC (Giulivo et al., 1981) and paclobutrazol (Costa et al. 1984). The latter, when applied at shuck-off, besides reducing shoot elongation, negatively affected fruit size. To avoid these undesirable effects, the chemical was applied as soil-drench.
