The present work is aimed at evaluating the effect on the residual stress pattern of two concurrent phenomena induced on austempered cast irons by Shot Peening: stresses due to the deformation and stresses produced by the transformation of the mechanically unstable retained austenite. According to XRD determinations of the amounts of the retained austenite variations and of the corresponding stress values, the leading phenomenon in the residual stresses settlement seems to be deformation related.
