The paper examines recent applications of Internet technologies to electronic commerce applications. It discusses how the Internet can help overcome some limitations of traditional electronic commerce systems and, particularly, eletronic data interchange. On the other hand, it discusses problematic aspects arising from the use of open communication environments like the Internet.
