Experiments on Reverse Field Pinches were formerly carried out in fast programmed devices employing insulating vessels; the program is now developing to relatively slow devices with metal liners on a larger and larger scale. Eta-Beta II, operating from the beginning of this year, is the first toroidal experiment of this kind (it will be followed by HBTX1A at Culham Laboratory and ZT-40 at LASL), and allows a gradual transition from the fast programming modes to the slowest ones and a direct comparison in the same device of the pinches produced in quartz or metal vessels. Besides a general description of the device, the main technical aspects are presented and discussed.

Abstract
Experiments on Reverse Field Pinches were formerly carried out in fast programmed devices employing insulating vessels; the program is now developing to relatively slow devices with metal liners on a larger and larger scale. Eta-Beta II, operating from the beginning of this year, is the first toroidal experiment of this kind (it will be followed by HBTX1A at Culham Laboratory and ZT-40 at LASL), and allows a gradual transition from the fast programming modes to the slowest ones and a direct comparison in the same device of the pinches produced in quartz or metal vessels. Besides a general description of the device, the main technical aspects are presented and discussed.Pubblicazioni consigliate
